The Neroli.

Long before vodka and redbull and jaeger and rockstar, the Neroli was one of the original alcoholic pick me ups. Combining vodka, caffeine and sugar, I learned of this tasty shot in a Russian bar in NYC many many years ago. Keep in mind the accessory takes preparation but the end result is worth the effort.

            2 oz chilled vodka

Thinly slice a lemon wheel. Coat one side with sugar and the other with fresh coffee grounds (yes, coffee grounds). Fold the wheel in half with the coffee on the inside or else the coffee will end up in your front teeth. Fold in half again. Drink and then eat the lemon pulp from the rind.

Unfortunately a lot of bartenders aren’t aware the Neroli exists. It may take a little extra tippage to get them to go the extra mile for you with the coffee and sugar coated lemon. If at the very least, include them in on the first round and I guarantee it won’t be a problem ever again.

*For an extra boost use fresh espresso grounds.
