Exit fire season. Enter rainy season. Most of us Southern Californians consider ourselves solar powered. After three consecutive days of rain and gloom most of us are beginning to slip into cerebral comas. Having accumulated more rain in the past 3 days than we did during the entire month of June, I think it’s about time for a kick start.

Coffee drinks are a sure fire way to raise spirits during these dreary days, keep us warm and blast us with a nice jolt of caffeine. Here are a few tasty caffeinated cocktails perfectly acceptable for an afternoon pick me up.

The Traditional Irish Coffee
1 ½ oz of Irish whiskey (such as Jamesons)
 Coffee

Most people think an Irish coffee is with Bailey’s Irish Cream; it isn’t. That is simply called Bailey’s and coffee.

Mexican Coffee aka Kahlua and Coffee
   1 ½ oz Kahlua
   Coffee

Hazelnut Coffee aka Frangelic and Coffee
1 ½ oz Frangelico (or any hazelnut liqueur)
   Coffee
You can easily turn this into a Chocolate Hazelnut Coffee by adding 1 oz of any chocolate liqueur.

Jamaican Coffee
   1 oz Tia Maria
   1 oz white rum
   Coffee

Kioke Coffee
1 oz Kahlua (or any coffee flavored liqueur)
   ½ oz brandy
   Coffee

Irish Vanilla Coffee
   1 ½ Bailey’s Irish Cream
   1 oz vanilla vodka
   Coffee

The Nutty Irishman Coffee
   1 oz Bailey’s Irish Cream
1 oz Frangelico (or any hazelnut liqueur)
   Coffee

The Nuts and Berries Coffee
   1 oz Bailey’s Irish Cream
1 oz Frangelico (or any hazelnut liqueur)
½ oz Chambord (or any raspberry liqueur)
   Coffee

These caffeinated cocktails are considered “specialty” drinks so not every alcoholic establishment is mindful of the presentation. While restaurants will more than likely have specific glasses and accessories for coffee cocktails and will top them with whipped cream; regular bars usually don’t do a lot of specialty coffee drinks while some bars don’t serve coffee at all. Depending on where you are, don’t be surprised if all you get is a side of milk and a packet of sugar.
