Lights out: Blackout
Lights out: Blackout

Brazil had another power outage today. This one was major, affecting more than 100 million people over a wide area including the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The outage also affected neighboring countries. This is not the first time, and all indications are it was not the last; a black eye for Brazil particularly after winning the bid for the 2016 Olympics.

Cause of the blackout is not known at this time but speculation ranges from an electrical storm, transmission problems at a hydroelectric dam, to computer hacking. The skyline was dark as were transportation systems and the airport.

Crime elements in larger cities banded together robbing people en masse in a phenomenon known as a "big sweep". All police were called to duty. This history of violence is of major concern to those anticipating the Olympics.
