As an avid crafter I passionately believe in creating my own handmade cards.  When I make my cards I use scrap book paper for the accents, but I prefer to draw my own images as opposed to buying the pricey ones at the crafting the store.  There are many cute scrap booking cut-outs available at crafting stores, but I love to get out my pencil and draw my own pictures. In this how-to tutorial I will demonstrate how to design a homemade pop-up.  A handcrafted pop-up card can be a special gift for a family member or a friend.

Suggested materials for this project:

  • Card stock
  • A drawing pencil
  • Colored pencils
  • Mod podge
  • A paintbrush
  • Your imagination
  • Scrap booking paper

Step one:

Use a ruler to divide a piece of card stock in half.  Draw a one inch by one inch box on the top half and the bottom half of the sheet.

.

Step two:

Cut along the vertical lines where the blue arrows are pointing on the picture.

Step three:

Once the lines have been cut fold out the "pop-up".  Start coloring the background with a grassy green colored pencil.  I like to create swooping strokes to mimic the look of real grass.

Step four:

Draw and color the pop-up image.  I decided to draw a picture of a daffodil because these remind me of springtime and Easter.

Step five:

Glue the pop-up image to the card.  Next, paste the letters "Happy Easter" to the card.  I sketched out the letters Happy Easter onto pink scrap book paper and then cut these out.  I glued both the pop-up image and the letters to the card using mod podge and a paint brush.

Step six:

Use mod podge to glue a piece of scrap book paper on the front of the card to cover up the hole made by the "pop-up".  I enjoy using scrap book paper as accents for my cards, but I usually draw most of the pictures.  Have fun making your own pop-up cards and do not be afraid to experiment!
