Painting brings to mind images of big messes, but this is not necessarily the case with three dimensional fabric paint. For this project I used tipped fabric paint, which is easy to control and has iridescent sparkles. This paint is similar to using frosting tips on a cake, which means you can make fun designs such as flowers and butterflies. My favorite designs for t-shirt projects are flowers, but you are free to pick any image that comes to mind. My nephew likes to paint zoo animals and trucks, and my niece enjoys painting butterflies and flowers. On my t-shirt I decided to create impressionistic roses by making circular squiggly shapes. Here are the supplies that I used for this activity:
Cardboard sounds like a funny thing to include on this list, but I used it to keep the paint from seeping onto the back of the shirt. In eighth grade I painted a shirt for Home Economics, but I forgot to put the barrier inside the shirt and the paint made a giant mess. Ever since that mishap I am very vigiliant about placing cardboard inside my t-shirt. Painting with tipped fabric paint is very easy, and even young people will be able to control this medium without making a mess. If you accidentally spill some of the paint simply grab a wet paper towel and wipe it up right away. Do not allow the paint to dry because it will become impossible to remove. The slide show below demonstrates how I made this colorful painted shirt.
