Hubpages is a wonderful website where people can write about their passions and always learn something new.  Some of the more engaging hubs (web articles) are about arts and crafts projects, and C.S. Alexis is one of the better hubbers on the site.  C.S. Alexis engages her readers by taking objects from nature, such as driftwood, and uses pyrography to create decorative snakes.  Growing up in the mountains and hiking I had always seen driftwood lying near our local creeks, but I never could have imagined all the creative uses for these little pieces of timber.  Pyrography is a craft I have just begun exploring, and I highly recommend buying a wood burning kit at your local crafting store if you are interested in this media.  One can take ordinary objects from nature and around the house and create one of a kind pieces of art work with pyrography.

Not only does C.S. Alexis give me new ideas about pyrography, but she also creates extraordinary works of art using mixed medias such as photography, drawing, and painting.  Her style is truly one of a kind, and I always look forward to the new projects that she writes about in her hubs.  Since I enjoy jewelry making I am especially drawn to her hubs on how to use supplies such as: beads, wires, cords, and thread.  If you are just getting into jewelry making her hubs will give you ideas about what supplies to buy, or what type of baubles you might enjoy designing.

Today I decided to sit down with C.S. Alexis via email and ask her a few brief questions about her arts and crafts projects.

Julia:

I really admire your art work and I was curious about what made you decide to become an artist.

C.S. Alexis:

I honestly think that the freedom to escape from reality was the major factor. Artistic activities allowed me to spend energy in a world of fantasy that was much less painful than my real world. Self expression without saying a word and not having to explain anything because my artwork spoke for itself.

Julia:

I love arts and crafts activities and could spend hours painting on a canvas, or creating a fun bracelet.  I was wondering what some of your favorite arts and crafts activities are, especially since you are so prolific and create so many beautiful works of art.

C.S. Alexis: I love wood burning / pyrography and I love jewelry making. Best of all I like mixing them together with mixed media. Functional creations, making things that are useful on a daily basis.

Julia:

Your hubs are jam packed with useful hands on advice for people at all skill levels.  Do you have any advice for people who are just beginning to get into arts and crafts?

C.S. Alexis:

I would advise that all people practice drawing and seeing. Looking closely at light, color and the relationship of objects to one another. I think working on basic skills will lead to better creations and drawing is primary. Keep sketchbooks and add to them like a journal. Sketchbooks should be saved as reference and will become tools as you work. The most important thing is to practice, practice and practice some more.

Julia:

I admire the eBay store Handcrafted Jewelry USA, which showcases many original pieces of jewelry.  This store is ideal for people who enjoys wearing exquisite handcraft jewelry, but do not necessarily have the time or desire to make these pieces on their own.  Do you have any favorite jewelry pieces for sale in the eBay store?

C.S. Alexis:

Yes I do and here are links for those.
