Seattle University playing its fourth game in eight days was outclassed by Washington on both ends of the court tonight. The tired legs, 3000 air miles, and a top 15 opponent playing on its home court were the deciding factors in this one. Some including me figured the Huskies would take the Redhawk's lightly but the huskies came out like they were playing UCLA tonight.
Washington played a great first half smothering the tired Redhawk's relentlessly all over the court. The Washington guards never let up and the Husky big men dominated inside the paint all evening. Seattle U only shot 20% from the field in the first stanza and the game was pretty much decided in the first ten minutes.
Washington had a big scare late in the first half when Quincy Pondexter was taken to the locker room with a shoulder injury. Venoy Overton tossed an alley-oop to Quincy Pondexter who leaped high for a tip-in layup, but fell over SU's Chris Gweth on his way down and landed awkwardly on his shoulder. Pondexter remained on the floor for several minutes before being helped off. Pondexter returned to start the second half with bruised ribs. He is going to be sore but should be fine going forward.
Washington didn't let up in the second half and upped the lead to over 30 points before calling off the dogs for the last ten minutes of the game. The Huskies definitely ready to play Washington State on Saturday and if they approach this game with the same intensity they should be able to win their first outright Pac Ten championship since 1953.
For Seattle University the game was pretty disappointing because they expected to play a lot better in their first game against Washington in twenty nine years. In the end the Huskies just had too much strength, stamina, and speed for the Redhawk's to deal with.
Up next for Seattle U is a round robin tournament in North Dakota to finish the season this coming weekend. Washington on the other hand has WSU on Saturday followed by the Pac 10 tournament and the NCAA tournament. UW could be as high as a #3 seed if they are able to win out.
