Happy National Play-Doh Day! Yes, that's right. The soft and smooshy can of fun for kids of all ages has its very own day for celebrating! Here are some more fun facts about Play-Doh to share with your kids (or help you win a Trivial Pursuit game at some point in the future!)...

When was Play-Doh invented?

  • In 1956! Play-Doh Brand modeling compound, a non-toxic reusable modeling compound developed by Rainbow Crafts in Cincinnati, is demonstrated and sold in the toy department of Woodward & Lothrop Department Store in Washington, D.C.. Play-Doh compound is available only in one color and size, an off-white, 1.5-pound can. One year earlier, it was introduced to schools, kindergartens and nursery schools.

How many tons of Play-Doh is made/sold each year?

  • 1.3 billion cans
  • 3.7 billion ounces
  • 230 million pounds (that’s about 296 full jumbo jets!)

How much Play-Doh was sold last year alone?

  • 223 million cans
  • 595 million ounces
  • 37 million pounds (that’s about 463 full tractor trailers!)

How many colors does it come in?

  • The number of current colors is 50 - and they're all in the Birthday Pack.

How long will 1 container of Play-Doh last if it is properly stored?

  • The product will last for years in a sealed can, though the company can't make any guarantees cause it varies based on storage conditions.

What's the world record for biggest Play-Doh creation and what was made/who made it?

  • The folks at Play-Doh say they're "unsure of the world record - however we do know that for Play-Doh's 50th birthday celebration in Feb. 2006 Warren Brown, host of the Food Network show Sugar Rush, "baked" a larger-than-life celebratory birthday cake, using more than 40 pounds of Play-Doh. That's a pretty big cake."

Where are there tips for Play-Doh clean up, activities and other fun stuff?

  • The Play-Doh website has a section dedicated to parents with printable activity mats to keep messes at a minimum, party planning ideas, suggestions on how to use Play-Doh as a creative and learning activity for your child as well as set up and clean up tips.

Right now Play-Doh is having a contest! The Ready, Go, Play-Doh $10,000 Creation Contest lets parents and kids get together to create Play-Doh 'recipes.' Upload a photo of your creation through September 30th and you could win a daily prize and have your work of art be displayed on the website for the world to see.
