For first time parents, some of the best gifts can be books in pregnancy. These books cover everything from things that go on in your body and with your body plus offer insights, sometimes with humor, about what to expect from conception through delivery and into baby's early months or years.

Here's a list of books that are worth including in a gift basket for a friend, picking up for yourself, or even checking out of the library:

  • What to Expect When You're Expecting - The ultimate must-have book for first time parents. My doctor's office actually gives out copies of this book to new moms she loves it so much. I love it too! It is a must have and must keep. I even refer to it now that I'm in my third pregnancy.
  • Preggatinis - One of the most fun books for pregnant mamas out there with all sorts of drink cocktails sans alcohol and filled with healthy fruit juices.
  • The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy - This is the classic dirt-dishing guide to pregnancy from a mom for moms. It starts off with a chapter on the 10 greatest lies of pregnancy and just gets better from there.
  • The Parent Trip: From high heels and parties to highchairs and potties - A humorous look at pregnancy from a mom who has been there and you can relate to. The author brings some laughs to otherwise stressful situations and share other facts so moms don't feel alone and overwhelmed.
  • Cheers to the New Mom/ Cheers to the New Dad: Tips & tricks to help you ace the first months of parenthood - This takes the idea of his and hers towel sets to the next level. It's a flip book - with one side written for moms, the other for dads. Both focus on baby's first months in a humorous way. This is a quick read, perfect for those early days when you may only have one minute to read before starting a new task.
  • Dysfunctional Father's Guide To Pregnancy Birth and Babies - Is men's only funny take on pregnancy without any of the gory details, focusing on stuff dads want to know and none of the stuff they don't. This guide is for those dads-to-be that delight in making fun of Oprah, but still may kinda sorta want to know what she's talking about.
  • The Expectant Father: Facts, Tips, and Advice for Dads-to-Be - A fact-filled month by month guide for the daddy to be. It explains what dads need to know about what their pregnant mamas are going through. Written by "the superdad's superdad," as called by Time magazine. He also wrote The New Father: A Dad's Guide to the First Year to take dads past the delivery room in the same honest and humorous without being silly way.
  • Is this a Phase?: Child Development & Parent Strategies, Birth to 6 Years - Written by a nurse and parent educator, this book is a no nonsense reference book for baby's birth through pre-K years. It looks to help parents eliminate all that worry and feel some relief and comfort in their parenting ways. It's sorted by phase and has lots of stuff that other parenting books don't like dealing with an older child's emotions through all sorts of situations like going to daycare, dealing with divorce, building self-esteem and more.

You may want to get a few things from a few categories for the ultimate shower gift!
