Moving with kids can be hard, no matter if you're moving into the White House or just a new house. As the Obamas pack up their stuff for their big move, it is important for them to think about things that every other family should think about when moving.

The Chicago Sun Times reports, "To prepare the girls for the big move to the nation's capital, the Obamas had talked to them about what would happen if their father won the presidency. The girls had plenty of questions, including whether they would get to decorate their own rooms in the White House (the answer is yes)."

Talking with children is the first step in an easy move, even if you have older babies or toddlers. Talking makes them feel comfortable. Here are some other tips:

  • Make sure children know their bed and toys and other things are coming along with you.
  • Tell them all the good things about the place you're moving to.
  • Order free moving kits from the state and city chamber of commerce and tourist. Look at these brochures with your children. Ask the kids what they want to go do when you get to your new home city.
  • When you get to where you're going, make sur to take time to o something fun with the kids. Don't let it all be business, no matter how busy you are.
  • Encourage your children to draw some pictures for the new home before you move.
  • If they have friends, let them know that they can see each other in the future. Let them set up email accounts to become pen pals.

I moved half-way across the country when my first born was only two months old. She didn't know anything other than she was hungry really. If you're moving with a small baby, plan for lots of stops along the way. Bring formula and bottles even if you breast feed, just in case. Also bring along your breast pump. And don't forget dishwashing fluid to wash bottles and pacifiers at the hotel.
