I challenged diaper companies small and large to send me their best diaper to test out. I will be reporting my findings about each diaper individually as well as comparing and contrasting them later in this series. Each diaper has been tested for about a month by both my one year old and 2.5 year old girls.
Fuzzi Bunz, fuzzibunz.com
Fuzzi Bunz makes one type of cloth diaper that comes in small, medium and large in both prints and solids. It costs $19.95. (They also sell second quality diaps for $11.95 but they come without an insert. Pretty good deal.)
I tried the Fuzzi Bunz in butter, size medium. Medium fits most babies from six months to 36 months old. (For a sizing chart, click HERE.)
If I had to use one word to describe Fuzzi Bunz it would be simple. They make one type of diaper that comes in three sizes (though they do offer x-small, x-large and petite toddler in some cases). Can't get much more basic than that.
Each diaper has snaps, not hook and loop tape (aka velcro). The snaps are adjustable at the waist and for the legs. This makes it easy to fit babies of all sizes from skinny waists to chunky thighs.
Fuzzi Bunz have a big pocket in the back for easy stuffing. Fuzzi Bunz has a patent on their pocket diapers. They were the first to make a pocket in a diaper. But lots of other companies offer the same basic design. What's good about pockets - they allow you to add as much absorbent material as you'd like so you can customize it based on your baby. That goes for Fuzzi Bunz and all other pocket diapers.
Each Fuzzi Bunz comes with a micro-fiber insert. You can add more stuffing from pre-fold diapers to washcloths or just more inserts if you have a heavy wetter. The insert it comes works well for us and we don't use any extra inserts for regular wear. It is very absorbent.
The outside is made of waterproof PUL. The inside is made of microfleece and is super soft. The softness really impressed me. And it has stayed soft through lots of washings. Poop has cleaned off easily too. It stays dry to the touch even after baby has peed in them, unless they are soaked. Then they're going to feel wet. Because of this, we don't use these at night. I've yet to find any cloth diapers that last all night though.
When I first considered switching to cloth diapers, many people recommended Fuzzi Bunz to me. I was scared about the snaps and opted for the same basic design but with hook and loop tape made by Bum Genius for my first cloth diaper. But now that I have tried snaps I like them. There's nothing scary about snaps. There is elastic all around the edges making it plenty adjustable to fit every baby well.
