For Philistines unable to detect the subtle differences between brushed titanium and painted steel, or a Chris King hub and a Huffy, the idea of bicycle art may seem absurd.
For the connoisseur, however, a bike part can be art. Bracelets made of chains. Clocks made from chain ringsn. Fish sculptures created from brake levers. These are just a few of the unique pieces up for auction at the 7th annual PA Bike Part Art Show.
Proceeds from the auction benefit Neighborhood Bike Works, a West Philadelphia nonprofit dedicated to increasing opportunities for urban youth through bicycling, and promotes cycling as an environmentally-friendly means of transportation.
Neighborhood Bike Works also generously supports through their "Earn a Bike" the efforts of Gearing Up, a nonprofit that seeks to empower women recovering from addiction.
Whether your interested in art, jewelry, or bikes, the 7th Annual Neighborhood Bike Works show will have something for you.
Works will be on display now through next Friday at Studio 34, 4522 Baltimore Ave. All items will be available for sale during a silent auction from 7 to 10 p.m. next Friday. The event will feature music, and food and beverages will be sold. A $5 donation is suggested.
