It will be like a scene from a science fiction movie or a cyclist's dream come true: parts of the city of Philadelphia will be devoid of cars.
Sunday, September 13 the Bicycle Coalition of Philadelphia along with TD Bank, the folks who sponsored the Philadelphia International race, will shut down the city's streets to provide an opportunity for over 4,000 registered cyclists to explore the city at their own pace without worrying about cars.
In addition to racing awareness about the bicycle as an alternate, more viable and sustainable means of transportation, the ride will also spotlight local advocacy groups like Neighborhood Bike Works and Gearing Up!
Non-profit Neighborhood Bike Works runs several programs all of which are geared toward getting urban youth involved with cycling while Mt. Airy based non-profit Gearing Up provides women
in recovery from drug and alcohol abuse with the skills, equipment, and guidance to ride a bicycle for exercise, transportation, and personal growth.
Gearing Up! has registered a group of current and past residents, along with volunteers, who will be completing the 20 mile loop. The non-profit will also have an information booth at Eakins Oval, as will other area cycling-related non-profits.
If you haven't registered, pedal on down to Eakins Oval and join the thousands of riders who will be taking a spin through the streets of Philadelphia.
Incidentally, this is not the Naked Bike Ride. Clothing is required.
