We've all seen make-shift shrines to motorists killed on our nation's roads and highways. From bouquets of flowers to collections of stuffed animals, loved ones remember their fallen friends and family in a variety of ways. The Ride of Silence offers cyclists an opportunity to commemorate their own who have lost their lives on the road while riding.
This event takes place in hundreds of locations worldwide including Philadelphia. The Ride of Silence is scheduled to take place Wednesday, May 20th at 6:45 pm. This rain or shine event starts at the foot of the front steps Rocky made famous in from of the Philadelphia Art Museum on the Ben Franklin Parkway.
A brief pre-ride dedication ceremony will take place at 6:45 PM followed by a 1 hour (8 mile) ride will depart promptly at 7:00 pm. The ride will proceed silently and at a pace of no more than 12 miles an hour. Helmets are required and bicycle lights are encouraged.
