FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Conshohocken, PA, USA:  In many ways, Pennsylvania’s UCI-C2 Wissahickon Cross, run this year on October 18 has been a microcosm of American cyclocross in the 21st Century.  First run in 2003, the MAC Powered by SRAM series race has migrated from a relatively small, out of the way park to a rural horse show grounds that can support the numbers of racers who attend.  Its history spans from the old-guard racers like Carmen D’Aluisio, who won the inaugural event, to the current generation of superstars like Ryan Trebon, who won his first-ever UCI race at Wissahickon that same year.  Last year, Laura Van Gilder repeated Trebon’s feat by winning her first-ever UCI cyclocross race at Wissahickon.  It’s a race where racers from as far away as Canada, Alabama and even Belgium have come to compete in the amateur classes and watch the fastest men and women in North America run-up past the noisiest beer tent in East Coast bike racing, and the place where the “death circle” or “pinwheel of death” spiral course feature was first introduced to a national audience.

Held on rural grounds of the Ludwig’s Corner Horse and Country Fair since 2005, Wissahickon has always been a deceptively difficult.  Though by no means flat, it is not nearly as hilly as the previous day’s Granogue Cross, and the wide-open nature of the property tends to make the hills look smaller than they are.  But that wide-open nature, combined with its hill top location, means that competitors at the Wissahickon Cross must often deal with an abundance of wind.  But that same wide-open nature, combined with its early season date, has also made Wissahickon one of the easiest races to see and a favorite of spectators and family members who come to the races primarily to watch and cheer on their favorite racer.

No fewer than three Philadelphia-area clubs are active in the production of the race, Wissahickon, Sturdy Girls and, most recently, Human Zoom/Pabst Blue Ribbon.  The race has also developed local support from other Philadelphia area businesses.  This year, Revolution Wheelworks of nearby Narberth Pennsylvania joins Victory Brewing and Go Cycling as principal sponsors of the event.
