Panthers: There were many impressive numbers in Week 1. Surely, Jake Delhomme's 247 passing yards without suspended Steve Smith was one of them. When Smith returns in Week 3, the Panthers will have one of the best passing games in the league. If you drafted Delhomme as Tom Brady's backup, you have no worries whatsoever ...
Smith remains the team's Fantasy MVP, but John Kasay might eventually give him a run for his money. An improved offense means more scoring opportunities, and Sunday's four field goals (two from 44 yards or more) were a serious "buy" sign. If he happened to slip onto waivers in your league, grab him immediately ...
DeAngelo Williams had 19 touches and rookie Jonathan Stewart just 10 in the opener, but it wasn't the ground game that won the contest for the Panthers. If they're going to improve, Stewart's chances are bound to increase. Don't give up on him yet, and certainly don't be a rush to get Williams into your lineup.
Chargers: So much for Antonio Gates' overblown injury. Four catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. Take that from a tight end every game ...
The disappointing part of the Chargers' offense Sunday was Chris Chambers, who caught just one pass all day. Sure, it went for a touchdown. But the point is: The Chargers have many weapons. And when two of them are LaDainian Tomlinson and Gates, that doesn't leave a whole lot of balls for the other guys. I'd cash in Chambers right now while the price is high.
