Cardinals: Got someone with running back problems in your league? Of course you do. Now's the time to offer up Edgerrin James. The Cardinals look like a good running team about three times a season. They exhausted one of them in the opener, so James' potential 100-yard games down the line are few and far between. Deal him now, especially with Tim Hightower looming as someone who is going to steal a lot of red-zone opportunities ...
So is it time to pick up Hightower? No. He had eight carries Sunday on a day when James had 26. Sure, he scored a touchdown, but when you get only eight carries, you're not going to score often enough to warrant fantasy respect ...
Kurt Warner will have better days. With Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin healthy, and Steve Breaston emerging as a decent third receiver, the Cardinals have the weapons to air it out when necessary. Being that they're still a bad team, that's going to be more times than not this season. Warner remains a solid fantasy backup.
49ers: One game into the season, Frank Gore has stamped himself as a legitimate first-round pick. Congratulations if he slipped to you. The Mike Martz-run offense will get better as the season progresses, and as the offense gets better, Gore's number will improve. Not that his Game 1 stats were bad ...
The conclusion after the loss to the Cardinals? The 49ers need to get tight end Vernon Davis more involved. Three catches for 51 yards is nice. Double that and he becomes a top-flight performer at his position. He's a must-start until further notice.
