The two keys to a successful draft in fantasy football are: 1) Selecting players who will perform better than expected; and 2) Staying away from guys who will disappoint. In this 32-team series, I examine both types of players on every NFL team as the clubs prepare to head to training camp. For a listing of all 32 capsules, click here.
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
2008 Fantasy Ratings:
Rushing: 28th.
Passing: 13th.
Overall: 23th.
Most draft experts raved about the 49ers' selection of Michael Crabtree, which no doubt will lead the so-called fantasy experts to predict big things for the Texas Tech standout receiver this season.
My advice: Don't buy into it.
Yes, the 49ers were very lucky to have the talented wideout fall into their lap on draft day. No doubt, he will be a very good NFL receiver someday.
But that day is unlikely to occur this season, at least not on a consistent basis.
First off, the 49ers want to be a running team under Mike Singletary, and have the back (Frank Gore) to make that happen.
Then you have the quarterback issue. The fact that Alex Smith is back in the mix has to tell you something about Shaun Hill.
Lastly, you have the free-agent addition of Brandon Jones. Even if he catches just 3-4 balls a game, that will impact Crabtree's numbers.
Bottom line: Crabtree was a great pick in April, but won't be in August.
Projected 2009 Overall Fantasy Rating: 20th.
Most likely 49er to be better than expected (2008 position ranking in parentheses): RB Frank Gore (13th among running backs).
Most likely 49ers to disappoint (2008 position ranking in parentheses): WR Michael Crabtree (rookie), QB Shaun Hill (not among Top 25 quarterbacks).
