There are four standout quarterbacks in fantasy football: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Tony Romo.
After Brady has been selected in Round 1 and Manning either later that round or early in Round 2, a wise fantasy owner quickly will turn his/her attention toward grabbing either Brees or Romo before all four top-flight quarterbacks are gone.
But what's the best way to go?
I like Brees.
The Saints have a chance to be the best offensive team in the NFC this season. They have a great back (Reggie Bush), a great receiver (Marques Colston), a nice assortment of complementary receivers (including potential breakthrough star Robert Meachem) and one of the top tight ends in the game (Jeremy Shockey).
Opponents have little chance of stopping this juggernaut this season.
Not that they did last year, either. Despite Bush being hurt for the most part and Shockey pursuing a championship in New York, Brees threw for 13 touchdowns and ran for a 14th over the final six games of the 2007 season. Even the mighty Brady couldn't match that.
Brees should be even better this season. The reason is Bush, who has the potential to go all the way everytime he touches the ball. It might seem unfair, but Brees gets full credit when the little guy takes a rather commonplace swing pass and goes 80 yards.
Don't get me wrong: I like Romo. But Dallas is a better defensive team than New Orleans, so the Cowboys are far less likely to get involved in shootouts as the Saints are.
Also, let's not forget where these teams reside. Dallas plays in the rugged NFC East and will encounter fantasy's 24th-toughest schedule. New Orleans, meanwhile, will have a much easier time in the NFC South, which it demonstrated in its No. 11 schedule rating.
Brees is your man.
