2008 fantasy tight ends: How they rate and when to draft them
Something is happening to Antonio Gates this season, and it has nothing to do with him.
With so many good, young tight ends having joined the NFL in recent years, depth at the position has never been greater.
It wasn't all that long ago that some leagues did away with the tight end position for lack of production. But now it's back in vogue big-time.
The list of potentially high-scoring fantasy starters goes at least 15 deep at tight end this season. That leads me to two conclusions:
- You don't need to be in any kind of a hurry to draft one. In a 10-team league, even if all nine other teams have picked a tight end, you can feel good about taking the 10th-best far later than your competition exhausted a pick on the position.
- While Gates figures to be the highest scoring tight end, several others have closed the gap on him. This has caused his value to plummet to the point where the person who selects him probably will be taking him too early. Don't let that be you.
