In the past two weeks, more and more TV news stations across the country began reporting on the practicality and legitimacy of online degree programs.

KIAH-TV 39 News in Houston reported that as unemployment continues to rise, so are the number of college graduates entering the workforce. This means that what is on your resume is more important than ever. Reporter Andrea Nguyen wanted to see how online degrees compared to traditional degrees from a large university of college. To find out the answer, she spoke with recruiters to see how they felt about the difference in degrees.
One recruiter reported that as long as the university is accredited, the degrees are treated the same way, and old stereotypes about online degrees are going away. Another recruiter mentioned online degree seekers are working full time during the day and attending online classes after hours and they’re getting a much more practical education. These online student brings both the degree to the table as well as the real world work experience.

WSAV 3 News in Savannah recently reported that Georgia South University has more students earning their online degrees than ever before. Seventy-two online students graduated on May 9.

KTVB 7 News in Boise talked to some students who were initially apprehensive to go with an online university because they thought there was a catch, particularly due to the hard sales tactics performed by large online for-profit institutions.  The reporter mentioned that the U.S. Department of Education warns there are some online programs that are nothing more than “diploma mills,” where you get a degree for a fee. There’s no education required and they are not accredited. Buyer beware. Oftentimes, students pay the price for convenience, which results in high tuition fees.

Recently, Vault, an online company specializing in careers surveyed employers in the U.S. about online degrees and found a little less than half received a job application from someone with an online degree. Interestingly, eighty-three percent reported that online degrees are more accepted now than five years ago.

As the media continues to cover the emergence of the booming online higher education market, there will be more degree options available to the student. More product means there will be something offered for everyone. And if paying high tuition prices is a barrier to go back to school to finish a degree or earn an advanced degree, students should look at public universities, which traditionally are much more affordable and also provide the quality brand to add to their resume.
