Today, eLearners.com posted the findings from their recent survey conducted by Kelton Research that identified perceived barriers Americans have for going back to school to earn a degree. eLearners discovered that four in ten believe the cost for higher education is the biggest barrier and an additional 10 percent worry about the actual value of a degree. Also, women were more concerned than men about the investment in higher education (43% versus 36%).

Terrence Thomas, Executive Vice President of Marketing for eLearners.com highlighted that the perception needs to change around costs because there is more than $143 billion in financial aid available, according to the College Board. In fact, last summer eLearners hit the road for a 40-city RV tour to provide free career coaching and an opportunity for Americans to apply for a full-tuition scholarship. eLearners addressed a multitude of questions about online learning and the classroom experience overall. The tour focus was to put Americans at ease about the costs associated with earning a degree and showcase the variety of financing options that are available.

Colorado State University-Global Campus hears similar responses on a daily basis. Many adults are in between jobs, hope to move up in their current job, or simply need to retrain and retool to jump start a new career. Many wonder how they can afford to go back to school and how they can find the time to fit it into an already jam packed schedule.

The affordability barrier is torn down because the tuition for CSU Global is priced incredibly well. Unlike other universities, there aren’t additional fees that are added to the total cost of the degree program. Those fees can quickly add up to an additional $100/credit hour. Also, the tuition rate is the same for everyone, regardless of which state they live in. Add in the tuition guarantee (meaning no tuition hikes), institutional scholarships and other incentives, and it’s a great value.

The online learning environment provides the flexibility that students are looking for. This format allows the student to do the coursework at a time that is convenient for them, whether it’s 10am or 10pm. No more mad dash commutes during rush hour to get to class. No more missing class if you have to work late, your child is sick or you are out of town on business. The classroom is at your disposal 24/7. Students have an entire week to complete their assignments, as well as interact with faculty and students. It’s ideal for working professionals that need to gear up for the 21st century work environment.

It’s more important than ever for Americans to head back to school. Our country’s global competitiveness depends on it.  Plus it’s a great way to set an example for children, so they can see first-hand that learning is a lifelong journey.
