The air has turned cool, the leaves are beginning to change colors, and Halloween is just around the corner. Now is a great time to bond with the family outdoors.

In addition to all the fresh air you could want, great farmers' markets, hayrides, and more, you can pick your own apples and pumpkins at several farms and orchards in the Louisville area. Imagine finding the perfect specimen to create your jack-o-lantern masterpiece this year or carefully selecting only the sweetest fruit to bake homemade apple pie just like grandma used to make. Visit one of the sites below with the family and make it happen.

Jefferson County
Hidden Hollow Orchard and Wildlife Sanctuary - Self-serve apple picking daily from dusk until dawn in autumn until the crop is fully harvested. U-pick by appointment only in the summer. Directions

Oldham County
Fox Hollow Farm - This local farm specializes in sustainable and organic farming techniques. In addition to a farm store that carries grass-fed beef and fresh vegetables, Fox Hollow Farm offers a U-pick pumpkin patch. Hours are Tuesday-Friday 11 AM to 6 PM, Saturday 1 to 5 PM. Directions
