The last thing celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton needed right now was more bad publicity, but that's exactly what he's getting. This time it involves his comments on the sudden death of Michael Jackson last week.
As news of Jackson's medical distress first started breaking, there were many rumors popping up all over the internet about the true nature of Jackson's condition. On his popular web site, Hilton wrote that he doubted Jackson had gone into cardiac arrest. Later, Hilton suggested Jackson was pulling a stunt to get out of a series of concerts planned to begin in July in London.
Once reliable news sources confirmed Jackson had indeed died, Hilton's speculative post was removed. The damage, however, had already been done. Calls for boycotts have popped up all over the internet and numerous Twitter users have urged others to unfollow Hilton's tweets. Hilton has tweeted about the situation, admitting his error and expressing sorrow for Jackson's family.
Hilton has spent a lot of time apologizing this month. Prior to his insensitive comments about Jackson, he was beat up by the manager for the Black Eyed Peas and then heavily ridiculed for his use of a gay slur in that assault. After much condemnation, especially from other members of the gay community, Hilton eventually said he was sorry for his choice of words.
Apologies and backlashes are some of the occupational risks associated with making a living by slinging mud.
