All of yesterday's press coverage of the sad death of Farrah Fawcett and the shocking death of Michael Jackson, buried the latest development in the ongoing Perez Hilton saga. Hilton, the celebrity gossip blogger who got decked by a Black Eyed Peas manager over the weekend, has issued an apology.
The apology referred specifically to the gay slur that Hilton hurled at Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am. The bizarre use of the slur apparently ignited the altercation and caused quite a bit of controversy for Hilton. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) immediately asked Hilton to apologize for the slur and Hilton categorically refused to do so. It appears Hilton has changed his mind.
"I am sorry," Hilton wrote on his website. "No one is forcing me to write this. I am not feeling pressured to say this. I am speaking out because I realize that the last few days have been more hurtful to me--and many others--than the repeated blows I suffered to my head in Toronto this past weekend."
Nevertheless, Hilton is moving forward with a civil lawsuit against his attacker, Polo Molina. Hilton says he is planning on donating any money awarded to the Matthew Shepard Foundation, an organization for diversity programs in education that is named after the young victim of a terrible anti-gay hate crime. Interestingly, the Matthew Shepard Foundation doesn't appear too interested in accepting Hilton's donation.
"We do not know the details of the lawsuit, whether it has been filed, the nature of his claims or the likely outcome," said Judy Shepard, who is the Foundation's Chair and Matthew Shepard's mother. "But because the lawsuit presumably involves the physical attack prompted by Mr. Hilton's admitted use of an anti-gay slur, the Foundation will be unable to accept any funds obtained in such a manner."
