How to choose an exceptional daycare for your child

Ensure the environment for your child is clean and organized
When my son was conceived, I was the mother all doctors, daycares and babysitters avoided. I wanted to know anything, everything and most important how my son’s well-being would be impacted. I didn’t really know any other new parents to give advice on daycares and stories of boogey-men daycares.
What I did come to find out are there are some key questions you should not only ask, but actually have proven to you, especially being a single parent. It’s true that being a parent is enough of a concern, but when you have limits on how often you can swing by to check (and you should always be able to do so by the daycare) because of your schedule, it is a reason to be cautious.
Here are some key questions to ask a daycare before you give them more than your name:
· What is their key form of discipline? Give an example of something a child a might do and ask how it would be handled.
· Is their filing system adequate? If there was an emergency, such as a fire, would they have a way to contact you?
· Is their menu visibly available and do they stick to it?
Believe your instincts
· What are their snacks? What do you consider a healthy snack?
· Is there a regular turn-over of staff, or will your child be allowed to attach to a caregiver?
· Have you checked the record of violations through the Licensing Standard for Daycare Centers?
· Have you checked the list of violations with the health department?
· Have you stopped any parents leaving or arriving at the daycare to receive a “first person” point of view?
· Do they have regular fire drills and a posted list of the fire escape? Can the person interviewing you tell you where it is without hesitation?
· Is the child to teacher quotient being followed, without exception? (If there is an exception one time, expect it is not the only time.)

When an infant cries, there is a reason.
When finally deciding on a daycare, be aware of any forms you may be signing, and if you haven’t got the time to read them today, then take them home to fill them out. Any daycare asking for explicit permission to take photos of your child should be cause for alarm.
Naturally, one would assume someone with a questionable reputation would not be hired by the daycare and a thorough background check would have already been provided. If anyone asks you something different from other daycares (definitely interview quite a few before deciding), ask them why. Don’t worry about seeming too forward because you are concerned about your child. Other’s feelings should come a lot further down the line.
