There’s nothing like pop culture to inject some much-needed enthusiasm into forgotten and underappreciated fashion. With Mad Men’s sensational popularity and even more sensational wardrobe, it's the perfect vehicle to spark interest in the curve-hugging styling of the mid-20th century.
Which is great news for vintage enthusiasts and excellent editorial fodder for the likes of Elle, Vanity Fair and even the Wall Street Journal. Even a few designers like Michael Kors took some inspirational cues.
This month AMC and Banana Republic hosted an open casting call to all of the Mad Men (but mostly Women) out there. The object was photograph yourself in 60’s attire as seen on the show, and the results were stunning. In fact, AMC’s Web site was so overloaded with entries that the site crashed and a second round was created – this time asking for a video entry. Here’s what some of the chic 60’s enthusiasts came up with:

First of all, I love the nod to Audrey Hepburn on the cover of Journal. If anyone could rock the groomed 60's silhouettes it's her and her defining frame. And the Feminine Mystique is very tongue-in-cheek.
Secondly, these tres chic folk are proving that truly great style is timeless. What Peggy, Joan and Betty were wearing in ad-wild Manhattan still have a flattering place on a woman's figure today, whether the woman reads Journal or the Feminine Mystique.
The best part is, these ensembles can be had in vintage and re-sale shops all over Chicago. And if you can't make it out to your favorite boutique or haven't yet embraced the wonders of buying vintage, Banana Republic has you covered. Partnered with AMC, they made their own Mad Men style guide, to help those that love the look but are still wary of the genuine article.
Be sure to check out the semi-final results when they come in at the end of the week. The wardrobe crew at Mad Men should do the same.
