Straw purses at Wacky Cats vintage
Vibrant straw purses at Wacky Cats Vintage

On a gorgeous day like today, cruising for vintage stores is more than a gig, it’s a treat. Strolling over to Wacky Cats vintage on Lincoln and Wellington in Lakeview and taking in the sun was pleasure enough, and stepping inside was no different. The experience of vintage shopping was clearly a priority here – great music from The Clash and Elvis Presley was rolling out of the sound system and I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a more organized (and therefore easy to peruse) vintage shop in my life.

The sunny environs outside the door were brightly reflected within with flowery, vibrant clothing occupying the racks. There were a number of tie-waisted A-line skirts, such as a navy number with quilted daisy appliqués and a khaki one with a white and blue sailboat – perfect breezy bottoms for the upcoming sticky weather and a reasonable buy between $20 and $24.

Feminine and fitted linen dresses also lined the walls, with soft colors and delicate embellishments. These ran between $40 and $80, and are a cool solution to balmy outdoor soirees this summer. And, in classic 40’s and 50’s shapes, these will do much more for your figure than your dreaded bikini ever could.

Despite these lovely items, the most stunning wares in Wacky Cats are the handbags. Many of them intricately ornamented and superbly preserved, these will add a unique and sometimes quirky flourish to both your Sunday best and favorite sidewalk-strolling comfort clothes.

Embroidered straw and southwestern emblazoned leather purses, running between $40 and just over $100, were my personal favorites for the summer, though I did get a kick out of a white and gold silk clutch, complete with companion gold compact within ($42) – just one example of the glamour and feminine touches of the dearly departed 1940’s and 50’s.

After keeping its doors open for 20 years, Wacky Cats has vintage down to a science, and it shows. Their gems are in excellent condition and the items are imaginative, clearly unique and indicative of a discriminating eye. If you don’t know what to carry your wayfarers and lipstick in this summer, I recommend stopping by Wacky Cats.
