Great Find on Clark and Surf

Great Find consignment shop on Clark and Surf uses no false advertising. Most of the items in the store weren’t spawned earlier than the 1980’s, so while the vintage gem is a rarity, what you will encounter is beautifully understated and won’t have a lot of wear and tear.

In fact, simple, chic, clean styles are what you should expect to see. There’s a healthy collection of well-tailored blazers and jackets from sophisticate retailers like J.Crew, Mark Shale and Ralph Lauren, with, much to my delight, one sprightly Betsey Johnson thrown in.

The “finding” is left up to consignment donators, who appear to be very good at it, so why not leave it that way? Final selection, however is in the hands of owner, Adriana Prosen, whose careful eye is nothing to sneeze at either.

Two notable older items were a supple suede Burberrys jacket and chartreuse silk jacket from Marshall Fields ($14), complete with the hallowed Chicago retailer’s namesake emblazoned all over the lining. The Burberry is no spring chicken, but the condition is excellent – I particularly like the charming gold and navy Burberrys label, indicative of their collections from the 1980’s.

The price-to-label ratio is probably the most astonishing element. The impeccably kept Burberry is only $39, while a modest red netted D&G cardigan hanging nearby is going for $22.

The oldest item I could find dated back to the 1970’s and stood well apart from the rest – this cotton tribal-print wrap dress was a definite temptation for hot summer days, but it looked so proudly different from the structured shapes around it that I let it be.

The vintage frock, however, did seem to have some kindred spirits in the jewelry case, most of which were original, newly-designed pieces. Two Frida Kahlo brooches caught my eye, which I learned were made by the owner herself, along with several other unique baubles.

While many vintage stores will have that one off-the-wall item that will shake up an outfit, Great Find has the strong, classical foundations with which an ensemble is built. As Prosen seems to know, when you do the basics well, the rest will follow.

Great Find is open later hours, so plan on making your trek in the afternoon. As of now, the store is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Great Find. 2919 N. Clark St.
