Do you want to see the King Tut Exhibit, now at the S.F. de Young Museum, but feel a bit deterred by the steep price of admission? I can honestly say that the next best thing to King Tut’s traveling artifacts (which I emphatically recommend by the way) is the Rosicrucian Park Egyptian Museum in San Jose –almost a third less expensive than a trip to the de Young’s Tut Exhibit. Those on a tight summer budget need not feel left out.
My arrival at the Rosicrucian Park was on a school bus, not as a student, mind you. I went as a parent chaperone. This, I will admit, was not the best method of exploring the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts in western Northern California. Escorting the restless children from room to room was a bit like a group outing at the zoo. You know: all you want to do now and then is stand at some of the animal exhibits for more than 30 seconds. This awe-inspiring museum requires ample time to truly appreciate the ancient Egyptian texts in the study library, to explore the vibrant roses in the 18th-Dynasty Peace Garden and ... to explore the tomb. Finally, you will want time to stretch your imagination in the historical Planetarium. And, in all fairness, not one child rushed past the mummy encased in glass.
A day outing to Rosicrucian Park is a really gratifying journey through the ages. Whether you venture out with the kids, or solo, the voyage is certain to bring you closer to the King Tut era.
