As we all anticipate the start of the California Golden Bears football season, which I will be doing a game preview late tonight for tomorrow's edition, other Cal athletic programs will be competing as well. I'd like to introduce you all to the Cal Bears Examiner's new feature that we call Bear Tracks. Bear Tracks will be a vehicle to bring you the latest news and events associated with Cal athletics.
Bear Tracks is not meant to be a substitute for full features of those sports, so don't worry. You'll be able to get your timely news here as well. What Bear Tracks will try to do is give you the latest news of offseason programs, and the event details of the in-season programs so that you can stop by here to find out when you're favorite program is playing.
CAL Basketball
Women's - Cal's dynamic duo of center/forwards Devanei Hampton and Ashley Walker have been named to the 2008-2009 "Wade Watch" list for the State Farm Wade Trophy Division I Player of the Year award. They are two of 25 selections for the list based on the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability. These are student athletes that "best embody the spirit of Lily Margaret Wade" For those of you that don't know, Wade is considered the “Mother of modern women’s college basketball”.
Walker, a 2007-08 second-team Sports Illustrated All-American, is the only player in school history with at least 1,000 points, 800 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 blocks. She is seventh all-time in Cal history in points (1,470), fifth in rebounds (824) and third in blocks (139). Walker has 200 career assists.
Hampton is the only three-time first-team All-Pac-10 choice in school history and a two-time honorable mention Associated Press All-American. In 2007-08, she was second on the Bears in scoring (13.5 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg). In Pac-10 games, the 6-3 Oakland, Calif., native was fourth in the conference in scoring (14.3 ppg) and tied for second in rebounding (8.4 rpg). Hampton has 25 career double-doubles after registering eight last season. She is ninth all-time in scoring in school history with 1,301 points.
Men's - ESPN's College GameDay will be making a stop next year at Haas Pavilion. It is the first time that the show has ever been to Berkeley. The program will be televised from the Newell Court on campus before and after the Bears' final home game on February 28th when they face off against UCLA. Circle that date, because coach Mike Montgomery will probably have the Bears in the Pac-10 title hunt this year. Season tickets are already on sale here.
CAL Golf
Women's - Cal's Junior phenom, Roseanne Niven, will be representing her home country of Scotland at the World Ameteur Team Championship October 8th to the 10th at Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia. The World Ameteur Championship takes place every two years in different countries. Other Cal golfers to have participated include Claire Dury, New Zealand (Puerto Rico 2004), Sofie Anderson, Sweden (Puerto Rico 2004), and 2004 NCAA champion Sarah Huarte, USA (Puerto Rico 2004).
Cal opens the 2008 season at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic Sept. 8-9 in Fort Collins, Co. as they will attempt to repeat as the Ram Fall Classic champs.
Events
Football - You probably already know that the game will be held at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, Saturday August 30th at 5pm PST. For more information, you can click that last link or this one here. (Can you tell that I'm hyped about the game which will be telecast on ABC?). You may not know that Coach Tedford has added to his 'Tedford Talk' blog. In it, he discusses this week's game, fall camp, the program's changes for the year, and last weekend's fan appreciation day. He's also pleading with you to come and show support at the opener by saying, "We need you at this Saturday's game against Michigan State. They are a very good team and very well coached in all three aspects of the game."
So what are you waiting for? You can get your tickets here.
Volleyball - The #5 ranked team in the country will begin it's season by facing off with St. John's University tonight at 7pm and UC Santa Barbara Sunday August 31st in the Cal Molten Classic at Haas Pavilion. The Bears will take on St. John's starting at 7pm tonight. You can go here for tickets. If you can't make it to the game and have Internet Explorer 6.0 or later installed, you can watch the game here. Soccer (or futbol or football, whichever you prefer)
Men's - The 13th ranked Cal team will be hosting UC Riverside today at 2pm. I know this is short notice, but you can make it if you try really, really hard. The game will be held at Edwards Stadium. After the game, they'll be heading down to Los Angeles to play a neutral site contest with #8 Maryland Sunday at 3pm. Oddly enough, my investigating skills weren't good enough to divulge the actual location of the Maryland game. L.A. is a big area folks. I'll update you if I find out in time. **<UPDATE>** Thanks to Cal's Media Relations Department, I've been enlightened on the Maryland game! The match will be held at Drake Stadium, home of the UCLA Bruins. UCLA's site will have the live stats, while CalBears.com will follow with a post game recap.
Women's - #15 Cal begins the 14th Annual Cal Invitational today at 4:30pm PST at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley. They are 1-0 and face Cal State Fullerton before playing St. Joseph's at 4:30pm PST on August 31st. The Sunday game will also be at Edwards Stadium.
Cross Country - Cal will begin their Cross Country season at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park on Saturday, August 30th. They will be competing in the 16th annual San Francisco Invitational. The women's 5K race starts at 9:15 a.m., followed by the men's 8K event at 10 a.m.
Field Hockey - The Bears will visit Pacific in Stockton to open their regular season Saturday, August 30th at 1pm PST Brookside field. The team just finished their exhibition schedule 1-1.
Alright, so that's all that I have for now. Get your blue and gold on, pull out your 'We're #1' foam fingers, and get ready for the start of the season. It promises to be a good one for Cal fans.
