There are numerous local flea markets and antique shows around the Oklahoma City area, but there is one market that should always be on your shopping radar -- Buchanan Markets held at the state fairgrounds.
The monthly show has been around since 1980 and is always a treasure trove for antiquers. Don't expect to see many high-end antiques, they are not the norm. But there are enough bargains and variety to satisfy the treasure hunters among us.
The mix of merchandise is incredible, from the local dealer who typically offers six booths of $1. tables, to the Tulsa dealer with the $800 teapot. Costume jewelry collectors can always find a dozen or so dealers selling their wares and the collectors of Blenko glass, Beanie Babies and Bakelite won’t be left out in the cold.
What did I find? My purchases at the last show include a 1990s Stars Wars model and two 100 year-old children’s books! The Shawnee pieces in the picture were intriguing to me, but were left them behind this time.
If you don’t find what you’re looking for at Buchanan’s, there are at least six antique malls and shops within a half-mile radius of the fairgrounds. So wear your walking shoes and spend the day searching for that perfect treasure.
Buchanan’s is usually open one weekend a month, Saturday and Sunday, with a $3 admission that is good for both days. Children under twelve are free and there is plenty of aisle room for those using strollers.
