Mad magazine auctions disappoint, Julie Newmar to make welcome appearance
As I pretty much expected, the 1970s Mad magazine auctions fell flat- no bids on any of them. Back to the drawing board to create one from many, combining the whole pile into a single, irresistible sale. Or perhaps two. At least the auction of four Mad paperbacks sold, albeit for the opening price of $5.99.
Several good auctions close tonight and I’m waiting impatiently for a few items to start creeping up. The Texas Instruments calculator is just over $20.00 and should rise a bit higher. There is one bid on the
ACU-ARC drawing ruler, but with four people watching, I expect it to get a little more action before it concludes. Also wrapping up tonight is the final Manoil lead soldier, sitting now at $7.82. It looks like the lead pirate duo will sink, no bids, even though the opening bid is a mere 99¢. And the Dennis the Menace lot of comic books is idle, not much hope for that batch either, I’m afraid.
Thursday night is looking good with the
Mitutoyo calipers riding at $49.99. It should see some additional action during the next 36 hours. A small group of Victorian trading cards (brought to you by Arm & Hammer) adorned with bird images has a bid of $6.49. The deck of Snoopy and Woodstock playing cards is still bidless, but I’m fairly certain, someone will latch on to these. However, I’m starting to sweat over the
Minerva planimeter. While it is bid up to $11.16, it’s nowhere near where it should be. With one day left, I’m a little worried about this one tanking.
Tonight I’ll be putting up some old View-Master reels, these include: a Batman set based on the TV series with Adam West and Boy Wonder- Burt Ward. These should sell for the simple reason that it contains views from an episode that starred Julie Newmar as the Catwoman. For all the right reasons, Julie Newmar has a devoted cult following and anything displaying her wanton image is likely to sell. Less exciting are 1970s sets from Hasbro’s GI Joe action figure and the Planet of the Apes TV series. Too bad Julie Newmar couldn’t make an appearance in these vintage reels. Could perk them up a bit-
Nudge, Nudge, Wink, Wink, Say no more.
It just occurred to me that a lot of things I grew up with are suddenly known as “vintage”. The Viewmaster reels, Hot Wheels cars, all those Mad magazines. You know…I don’t think I like that.
A quick Flippy the Frogman update...So far Flippy is sort of a floppy- no bids, and only one watcher. Stay tuned.
