The 2008 college football season hasn’t even officially kicked off and UCLA and USC are already talking trash.

Despite the fact the rivalry game isn’t until Dec. 6, UCLA took out a rather bold full-page ad pointed at USC in the Los Angeles Times this week.

Apparently new head coach Rick Neuheisel and Bruin Nation think USC’s run of dominance in Los Angeles will be coming to an end this season.

“THE FOOTBALL MONOPOLY IN LOS ANGELES IS OFFICIALLY OVER,” the ad reads.

Pac-10 voters in the preseason poll disagree. Most of the national media disagree. Heck, most of America disagrees, but at least the Bruins (picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll) have faith. Then again, we heard this from the Bruins last year with the “Rose Bowl or bust” campaign and national title talk from the players.

I have a feeling USC isn’t too worried about the Bruins just yet, with Saturday’s opener taking place in Virginia (3:30 p.m., ABC) followed by a bye week and the home opener against Ohio State on Sept. 13.

Quarterback Mark Sanchez appears on track to start Saturday’s season opener after missing 17 days with a dislocated kneecap. (And you thought UCLA was crazy for taking out ads calling out USC.)

UCLA, meanwhile, hosts Tennessee at the Rose Bowl on Monday (5 p.m., ESPN), and I’m sure the Vols are thrilled that the Bruins are talking about USC more than three months before the regular-season finale at the same venue.

While the Bruins and Trojans are talking rivalry, four Pac-10 teams will actually be playing for conference bragging rights this week when the league opens its 93rd season.

Oregon State opens the season Thursday at Stanford, while Washington opens at Oregon on Saturday.

Let the real games begin.
