Long Island has always been a hotbed of musical activity. From established bands like Dream Theater and Blue Oyster Cult, to more recent bands like Brand New and Taking Back Sunday, there’s no question that the island as long as the iced tea which bears its name is steeped in tradition as far as music is concerned. As seasoned veterans of Long Island’s music scene, the members of the pop/rock quartet The Promise hope to follow in the footsteps of the aforementioned local success stories.
The Promise are comprised of former and current members of such notable Long Island mainstays as The Getaway Drive, Doctor Love and the Gang, and Better Than Toast. The group, who has only been together since January of this year, just finished recording their debut, self-titled, four-song e.p. with Anthony “Santo” Santonocito at Killingsworth studio. Their polished brand of rock is highly refreshing, evoking hints of Sugarcult and The Movielife mixed with a unique twist of flair and charisma.
The Promise’s first show featured an enormous amount of energy. For an inaugural performance, the band was surprisingly well rehearsed, tight, and concise. Their experienced backgrounds certainly lent to their ability to rally the crowd and garner an impressive response. Lead vocalist/guitarist David Faulhaber led the charge as the band powered through some minor equipment glitches and took the venue by storm.
Their songs have just enough pop to keep you singing, just enough punk to keep you moving, and just enough rock to keep you coming back for more. “Wake Up” was easily the highlight of the evening, and the melodic “I’m Not Sure” showcased the bands vocal harmony abilities. The matching white Gibson Les Pauls added a classy touch to the unmistakable gritty low end of the Fender Bass. Unfortunately, their short set did leave the audience wanting more, but with a summer tour being planned, rest assured that these cravings will be satisfied in the near future.
Expect big things from these guys. With all the right tools in their belt, look for The Promise to build quite a reputation for themselves.
