Funcom's The Secret World has been, well, secretive for quite some time. After PAX 2009, however, we've learned several details about this dark world.
We know there are three factions; Dragons, Templars, and Illuminati. These factions each have their own way of pushing back the evil that inhabits the real world. The Dragons are stationed out of Seoul, Korea and use weapons like katanas. The Templars are holy crusaders that hail out of London with tradition. The Illuminati come from New York City with a deceitful and nasty nature.
These factions are working toward the same goal ultimately, but because of the difference in views they will kill each other on sight. Choosing your faction is a big deal. You can't change it later unless you reroll. You don't level in this game rather you gain favor for your faction and move up in it. GameSpot eloquently puts it, "Whether you're slaughtering zombies or completing missions, everything you work for will be reflected in your score and increase your standing within the faction."
There are guilds in TSW and they're called cabals. As you rank up with your secret society faction you'll gain access to housing and unlock other perks. Since there isn't traditional leveling in the game, your skills are your powers and those will be what you improve.
According to Massively there is gear in the game with stats but,
clothing itself will only affect the way your character looks. This essentially falls in line with Funcom's focus on people being able to play the way they want and look the way they want.
Visit Massively, GameSpot, Eurogamer, and MMORPG.com for their previews of the MMO game as well. Also, watch the cinematic teasers here and go take the quiz to find out which faction you are.
