In a game with a plethora of powers, abilities, and customizable attributes it's good to know that even though powers may seem similar they're not. Champions Online is that game and here's a rundown of developer blog to explain Energy Projectors.
Energy Projectors are elemental powers that usually shoot from your person, hence the projector part. Fire, Electricity, Force, and Ice are those powers. At first glance they're using the same mechanic, but in the developer blog at the official site it's explained how different they really are from each other.
Fire and Electricity are ranged and they're related to each other though that mechanic. However, "Fire is all very much about location-based AOE," while "Electricity has arc-based damage." Clearly this means one is better for area of effect damage while the other jumps from mob to mob. The blog goes on to differentiate
Force and Ice are further removed from the previous two powers than they are similar. "Force is a defensive set masquerading as an offensive set," because it contains powers like force fields and knockbacks. Ice is crowd control with "slows and snares."
In summary, just because these four power sets are a part of the Energy Projector title they are uniquely their own. Each has its own time and place during a grouping situation which is marked by terms like AOE, DOT, Knockbacks, and CC. Obviously, the powers are different and almost specialize for certain situations. Perhaps this informative developer blog will help you make your decision about powers come September 1, 2009 on PC and sometime later this year on Xbox 360!
