Best Friends Animal Sanctuary reported that they rescued 215 dogs from Missouri puppy mills, transporting them to New York over the Mother’s Day weekend.  The puppy mills had discarded the dogs because they were either too old to breed or too sick to sell.  Unlike a high-profile dog recently touted as needing a second chance, these dogs were at grave risk.

If they hadn’t been rescued, these precious dogs and puppies would probably have been killed or sold at auction for as little as twenty-five cents, according to the Best Friends report.

Best Friends worked with National Mill Dog Rescue to rescue the dogs, including Cocker Spaniels, Chihuahuas, mini Pinchers, Jack Russell terriers and poodle mixes, which are in high demand in the New York/ New Jersey area.  Using an operation called Pup My Ride, Best Friends transported the lucky dogs to area shelters such as the North Shore Animal League America, which will find the permanent, loving homes the dogs deserve. North Shore is the "world's largest No Kill animal shelter," according to their website.  Dogs requiring extra care will be returned to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary—because that's how Best Friends rolls.  Just ask the Vicktory Dogs.

The rescue and transport of the dogs is part of Best Friends' national campaign: Puppies Aren't Products.  More rescue missions are expected.  I'll keep you posted.

In addition to rescuing dogs at the unfortunate sources of their torment—puppy mills—Best Friends is also focusing on the retail end of commercial breeding through peaceful, educational demonstrations at pet stores.

I have learned from Best Friends to be hopeful that if more people knew where the puppies in the pet stores and on the Internet came from – over bred and neglected dogs – more people would choose to adopt instead of supporting puppy mills by buying puppies from pet stores.  The puppies are often sick or have behavioral or socialization issues, which leads to their being abandoned.  I want to see us become a nation of No More Homeless Pets.  Best Friends believes we can succeed.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is working on a solution to end puppy mills.

You can be part of the solution, too.
