If there is one thing I have learned from traveling, it is this: you will get much further, much more easily, with a sense of humor.
The Czech word for ice cream is zmirzlina. It is a very fun word to say, and sounds funny to my English-geared ears. Therefore, I and many other people like to say it all the time, a) because we love ice cream and b) because it's so fun to say.
The other day, I was standing on the Metro station with my two American friends and one Czceh friend. We asked him, "Hey, you know how zmirzlina is kind of a funny word? Are there any words in English that just make you laugh when you say them, any words that are weird in your mouth?"
He paused for a moment and said that he would have to think about it. While he was thinking the conversation twisted and turned to a few different subjects, but in about two minutes he says, with no introduction, "Ah, yes. I suppose... chipmunk."
Language barriers are hard, and learning a new language to bridge the barrier is even harder. But it's so much easier when you can laugh at it!
