The line was outrageous. Women in sky high Jimmy Choos and butt cheeks hanging out flooded the area between the ticket booth and the entrance. L.A. had corrupted men’s sense of fashion recently, forcing most males into button downs with tattoo inspired and gold leafed designs on the back. For once, the men were just as shiny as the women. The evening was rapidly shifting into night and the dark sky gave solace to the fact that Crystal E, and her friends, Olivia, and Kat were, at this point, starting to feel the rushing of the drug. Crystal E’s eyes felt heavy, a pleasant contrast to the feather like euphoria her body was experiencing. Her palms were smooth and slightly damp and she was hanging on to Kat’s arm for dear life.

“Wow, look at this line,” Kat said. Her long blonde hair was clinging to her shoulders and Crystal E absentmindedly ran her fingers through it. Kat laughed.
“Girl, you’re going to get us kicked out before we even get in,” Olivia joked. She grabbed Crystal E’s hand and held it tight. “Is it strong?”
Crystal E nodded her head and felt a smile snake across her face. The muscles in her face pulsed with pleasure, so she grinned wider and wider until it felt her heart would burst with happiness. She needed this. They all did. That was the only thought she had in her head at the moment. Crystal E was tired of working. Looking at people’s bank accounts all day. Fighting with those who wanted fees reversed, those who were mad about the recession, those who were losing their homes, their cars, their jobs. What better way to combat the economy other than going out and well… being a little bad?
Once the girls were in, things felt more vibrant and alive. Finally, her exterior matched her interior. The giant disco ball spat out beams of light in all directions and the colors coming from the DJ booth were flashing to the music. All of a sudden, Crystal E was high as a kite. Olivia and Kat were making their way to the bar and she followed, slowly. Kat pushed to the front and leaned over the bar, pressing her body to the edge as best she could. Her breasts literally calling out to the hot bartender for some attention. He came over to take their order. Then she turned around and handed Crystal E and Olivia a beer.
“Beer?” Crystal E asked, her nose scrunched up.
“It doesn’t matter what we drink, you know that.” Kat said over her shoulder as she paid the bartender. “We’re going pure.”
“It matters to me, I want an effin' cocktail!” she yelled back.
“The last time you drank and dropped, you passed out and wasted your pill. Now drink your beer, it’ll taste good at least.” Olivia replied. Olivia’s eyes were drooping and her entire face began to slacken. Crystal E laughed at the look of her.
“Oh, Olivia, you’re feeling it huh?”
“I am, actually. Pretty clean stuff I must say.” The three of them made their way to the middle of the dance floor. The humidity of people’s bodies enveloped them and Crystal E could smell both smoke and sweat. But at the moment, it smelled wonderful. She moved her body to the music, her limbs feeling like they were going to detach and float amongst the vaulted ceilings and rapid moving crowd.
The time would vacate their realities and nothing but pure bliss would replace it. And in one horrifying second, she realized that without additional pills, her body would burn through what she had taken earlier and the end would come too quickly. She’d wake up from this conscious dream saddened and ready for more.
“I freakin' love this song,” screamed Kat. Her hand was on her chest and she bounced to the electronic beat that thumped bass deep into the hollows of their bodies. Crystal E knew the night was becoming a dream again, like all E nights ultimately become. The time would vacate their realities and nothing but pure bliss would replace it. And in one horrifying second, she realized that without additional pills, her body would burn through what she had taken earlier and the end would come too quickly. She’d wake up from this conscious dream saddened and ready for more.
“Here, we should take these last three,” Crystal E cried out over the music to her friends. “Then we should go scouting for some more.”
“We only have two each tonight?” Kat asked, her blue eyes already worried and heavy with the drug.
“Yeah, sorry. I don’t know what I was thinking.” She pulled out her Altoid box and knelt down so security wouldn’t see her. As she was kneeling, the legs of the dancing crowd pulsated around her. A forest of pants, smooth calves, stilettos and again, sweat, steam, and smoke. She pulled out the last three and slipped her friends one each. She popped hers and stood back up.
“Outside?” Olivia asked. Kat nodded and they started towards the long staircase to the smoking area. Outside felt fresh and as the sweat on their bodies cooled their skin, Kat and her “get whatever I want and/or need” rack went looking for a few cigarettes. She came back with some menthols and a Marlboro light.

“I’ll take the menthol.” Crystal E fished for a lighter in her clutch and put the cigarette to her lips. She began inhaling the cool smoke and it flooded her lungs like a wave of cold water. They sat on a bench, leaning on each other and holding hands. A tall, lanky fellow came waltzing up with glow sticks in his hands.

“Having a good time?” he asked, grinning. Crystal E could tell he was inebriated, with what she couldn’t tell. Normally, they’d turn away from such an unappetizing creature, but the chemical running through their bodies made them open like new flowers.

            “Totally!” Olivia smiled.
“Yeah, good crowd tonight,” said Kat.
“Care for a light show?” the guy asked.
“Absolutely!” said Crystal E. With their mouths gaping open like children, they sat back. He brought the orange and purple sticks in front of their faces and held them between his fingers with professional ease. His movements were swift and clean. He twirled the sticks around his own hands, perpetuating a glowing momentum that began searing in their minds and tiring their eyes. Crystal E felt more intoxicated than ever, her psyche abandoned for a split second. Just then, a security guard came over.
“You guys can’t be doing that around here,” he said in a thick voice. The lanky guy giving the show scoffed and dropped his hands.

“No light shows?” Crystal E yelped once the guard was gone.

“Guess not,” the lanky guy said. “Vanguard doesn’t want to turn into a freaking E party. That’s the first time they’ve ever stopped me actually.”

“Well,” Kat started. “Is there anything else you may have to give us?”
“Or sell us?” Olivia finished.
The lanky guy smiled, put his shoulder length hair behind his ears and said, “Follow me, beautiful ladies.”
