Halloween this year was more than just promiscuous costumes and house parties. If you were lucky enough to be at Hard Haunted Mansion this past weekend, then you know what I’m talking about. With some of today’s top DJs and electro bands coercing the madness out of people, this Hard event was a rabbit hole of wild trance, heart thumping bass, and hypnotizing light shows.
Friday night featured A-Trak, The Bloody Beetroots, and the genius of Deadmau5, just to name a few. A-Trak’s rollercoaster of sounds began earlier in the evening and set the tone for the rest of the show. It’s simply magic when A-Trak hits the records, with smooth transitions and funky beats, he spins nothing but pure adrenaline. The crowd seemed to swell with ever scratch and every new track he tossed on.
It wasn’t until The Bloody Beetroots came on did the crowd soar with insurmountable energy. This masked duo spins complete chaos and as soon as their sound spread across the auditorium, it was like an epidemic. Indians, fairies, rave babies, candy kids, half naked men and women all around bounced as high as they could when The Bloody Beetroots’ beat dropped. Their sound is like a drug, flowing in and out like blood in your veins. Electronic keyboards and ghoulish organ mixed with rapid drums makes these guys perfect for Halloween. Finally, the night began to lull and many found themselves waiting for Deadmau5 to put the cherry on top.
Deadmau5, who most people came to worship and who some donned dead mouse masks for, took awhile to come to the stage. Throughout the sea of people, one could see various dead mouse masks: purple, red, white, black, all waiting for the legendary DJ to spin. The crowd simmered in their anxiety as the quiet spread throughout the auditorium. Without lights and sound, the crowd looked confused and silly. Everyone was in a different world it seemed. No one was on the same page, some were laughing, standing around, some were moaning on the ground, lost in another world, and a lot were sitting on the hard cement clinging to each other.
Finally, around 2:15 a.m. did he finally grace us with deep bass and intoxicating rhythms that simply dripped with some dark human emotion. It is as if a black light bulb goes off within you when Deadmau5 plays. His electronic instrumentals were of epic proportions, his light show displayed crazy images of mice and colors, shadows of women dancing. Even more amazing, were the Zelda and Super Mario Brothers video game tracks as well as some Daft Punk. Everyone was as one again, moving their bodies, getting caught up in the trance, and finally tiring out as the last few minutes of Deadmau5’s set ended. With the screen donning a goodbye from the fantastical DJ: KTHANXBYE, the beginning of the Halloween weekend was over.
