This Examiner column does not typically deal with political issues or commentary about those issues unless it involves the likes of the very colorful mayor of Springfield (Doris Wolfe) who is secretly gay and cannot bring herself to tell her grown daughter about it (let alone her constituents)--or the embattered district attorney (Alexis Davis) from Port Charles who has been recently exposed by the mayor of falsely accusing him of murder because she they had an affair and she never got over the fact that he dumped her.

That's about as political as I get in this forum. Lately however, I have been unable to escape continuous headlines and broadcast coverage about soon to be ex governor Sarah Palin and her shocking decision to step down as from her post in Alaska. One would have to be living under a glacier to not realize what's going on in Palin's life these days.

Palin has always been a soapish character so to speak, but her decision in itself was not enough to prompt me to even mention her under my soap opera umbrella of topics.  It was something I found on a list of ethics violations filed against the high profile governor that caused me to share this piece of news.  Palin mentioned during her resignation speech that she and her husband have spent over $500,000 in legal fees in an attempt to fight the charges and set the record straight.

One of the charges simply stood out:

Jan. 12: Complaint alleging interference in a job hiring was filed under the name of  Edna Birch, a busybody character on the British soap opera Emmerdale. Palin's attorney, Thomas Van Flein, said no one by that name could be found living in Alaska and the filer refused to use a real name, so the complaint was dismissed Feb. 20."

Rumors are circulating that Palin's decision to step down won't land her in a "hockey mom" role. Some say there's a book deal in the works and other's claim she shopping around to host a television talk show.  The bottom line here is that she won't be going away anytime soon.

I was just thinking how fabulous it would be if soap opera viewers had the power to file ridiculous storyline charges, (RSC) against the powers that be as their favorite soaps character.  Here is what some of those charges might look like:

  • Springfield Mayor Doris Wolfe filed RSC charges today against catholic priest Father Ray for continually managing to spook Natalia Rivera regarding her lifestyle choices.  Unfair counseling practices formed the basis of the mayor's complaint whose only public comment regarding the charge was "Let the girls kiss."
  • Also, in Springfield, a second set of RSC charges were filed by Reva Shayne O'Neil against ex-husband Joshua Lewis for shadowing her every move ever since her husband Jeffrey took off for Bosnia. Ms. O'Neil has alleged the odors coming from the vehicle Mr. Lewis has been sleeping in outside her home smell like a gymnasium and she has been unable to air her house out as a result of the situation.
  • Out in LA, RSC were filed by Brooke Logan against the powers that be at The Bold & the Beautiful.  The unfathomable lack of available men in LA, the fact that she is continually paired with a whimpering momma's boy who has just dumped her to return to his ex-wife and his grown children, and the fact that she is continually subjected to the machinations of her ex-mother in law were all covered in the complaint issued by Ms. Logan.  One way to settle this complaint may well be to hook Brooke up in a steamy relationship with Bill Spencer Jr.

You get the idea.  Now, come up with a few RSC charges of your own.  And, if you have any thoughts on what Sarah Palin's next job should be like I did back in November, please post your thoughts here.
