While Archie Andrews and his circle of friends have virtually nothing to do with the world of soap operas, the classic love triangle between Archie, the ultra rich Veronica Lodge and Betty Cooper, the cute blond with that endearing girl next door quality has lasted for over 65 years. That's almost as long as Guiding Light has been in existence.
Archie's love life with all its ups and downs was my first exposure to a love triangle despite the fact that my mother and grandmother always had a soap opera quietly playing in the background, I wasn't paying attention--at least not in a conscious way.
Archie Comics has announced this long-running love triangle will soon come to an end. Evidently, Archie has finally made up his mind about who he wishes to spend the rest of his life with and Veronica Lodge is the winner.
Reader reaction was swift according to Labonita Ghosh over at DNA Entertainment:
Following a teaser, readers were in a tizzy about whom Archie would pick to be his wife in the 600th issue -- and then the angry fan mail followed, saying he'd made the wrong choice. Clearly, these new twists are turning Archie and the Gang into a comic book soap opera."
This is one comic series that does in fact have a soapish air to it. It should be very interesting to see this wedding play out. You think Veronica will make Archie sign a prenup? Will Reggie swoop in on Betty? Will the marriage last for as long as this gang from Riverdale went to high school? How has this classic love triangle most resembled your favorite soap?
