There couldn't have been enough two-ply tissues on the planet to get me through this week's episodes of As the World Turns. Tears were simply streaming down my face as I tried to digest and absorb the the agony several Oakdale characters were forced to endure.
Brad's death at the hands of his own brother Jack brought Jack to his knees. Like him or not, this Oakdale cop walked into a situation and reacted just like any other law enforcement professional would have. He had no clue his brother was inside. Good old uncle Ralphie took Katie hostage and when Jack went to rescue her, he heard gunfire and shot back without knowing the bullet that had just discharged from his weapon would kill his own brother who was also trying to save Katie.
In the meantime, Liberty has not only miscarried her child this week, but she has had to deal with the loss of dad Brad as well. This kid has been torn by the sometimes useless adults in her life trying to tell her what to do about her pregnancy and she barely had a second to digest the loss of her child before learning her father was gone as well. The heartbreak in Oakdale has been surreal in one sense.
Liberty had just gone to tell Emily and Paul she lost the child she was planning to let them raise and in that scene we witnessed some additional over the moon acting. After Emily told Liberty she would always be there for her and encouraged her to believe the loss of her child was not her fault, Emily broke down in Paul's arms once Liberty made her exit. I actually never believed I would like Emily and Paul as much as I am these days.
Oh, and what can I say about Katie? Here's a girl who was held hostage in a warehouse and gave birth solo. Once she is rescued and does get to the hospital, she learns Brad has been admitted after sustaining a gunshot wound. Brad emerges from his coma, speaks to his wife and wants to see his son. Before Katie can bring the baby to him, he takes a turn for the worse and dies. Katie takes her new infant and places him in the arms of his dead father. It was too painful for words.
Henry is also grieving in his own way. He lost Vienna who could not accept the fact that his greed placed her life in so much danger, and now he knows he has also lost Katie, his best friend. Henry is definitely about to blow a gasket, but the one unlikely constant in his life these days seems to be Barbara. Slick cougar woman Babs tells Henry he does has to take responsibility for some of his choices yet reminds him, he wasn't the one that attempted to slip a lethal poison into her cocktail and he wasn't the one who pulled the trigger that ended Brad's life. Sweet scenes between these two when there are no money battles involved, don't you think?
Oakdale has honestly been great lately, but naturally, I have a few gripes. I am so tired of the Lily/Damian/Holden thing. Lily initially handled the alleged loss of Holden in typical soaps style by having grief sex with Damien before Holden's body would have even had the chance to chill if he had actually floated to the other side. Lily ignored her kids and allowed Damian to lure her in. The woman is too weak for words. Oh and Holden is not such a champ either. I don't know about you but I hated the fact that he left Jack to spend a weekend with his kids knowing his cousin needed him. He had to recognize that Jack needed someone besides Janet to talk to about know.
The Oakdale PD has also made my list of ATWT gripes. What the heck is Margo thinking? She allows a grieving and torn Jack to keep his badge, carry his gun and hit the streets before even burying the brother he accidentally shot? Shouldn't she give him some paid leave and arrange for counseling or something before he comes totally unglued? Are there any cops in the house? I am sure this would never happen in the real world. If nobody is going to recognize the fact that Jack needs some counseling about now, the very least someone could do is toss Janet off a cliff or something because that could help the guy.
Despite its minor flaws, Oakdale is a five star soap right now and I am hoping it continues along this path. Please share your thoughts below.
