Nothing cripples ones creativity more than Twitter and the soaps. While the bird may well be the word, it has become too fascinating for words and even more compelling for me as a soaps fan/reporter when my little tweeting bluebirds are sounding off about soap operas. It's frightening to me that I cannot stand to miss important tweets especially since so many soap opera performers are tweeting more than a few 140 character teasers on a daily basis.
Tracking developments on unfolding soap opera storylines is always difficult when you cover all of them for a living, but ever since the soaps actors noted for keeping us on the edge of our seats have become so engaged in the Twittisphere, I am getting nothing done as many of you may have noticed. I don't want to miss one beat and frankly, it is driving me nuts.
Take today for example. On General Hospital, Claudia manages to kidnap a pregnant Carly (who just went into labor) in a function room filled with mobsters at the Metro Court. I had to follow this dastardly event but by the same token, if Sarah Joy Brown happened to be tweeting, I would have required Prozac or something if I missed it. None of the mobsters were able to save Carly from the mafia wife's attempt to save herself at Carly's expense and when the the cops did show up they focused on preventing said mobsters (Jason for one) from rushing off to look for Carly. 'Let the cops do their job" is consistently the operative police phrase on GH yet none of these copper guys or gals have ever managed to take one mobster totally out of the picture.
Things could be worse however. I can only tell you that if these actors were Tweeting in character (some show should do that) I would totally fall apart in terms of remembering things like the day job and my husband's birthday.
Sigh, I love the fact that these actors are taking the time to interact with their fans. Twitter represents a terrific way for them to get fans more invested in their character than they already are, and it is a thrill for those of us on the outside of their worlds to have that opportunity to look in. There are moments however when I can barely take the tweeting thing for one more second.
Crystal Chappell (Carly/Days, Gina/Venice. ex-Olivia/GL) has perhaps become the master goddess of the Twitterverse the same way she managed to become the goddess of the soaps. I fondly recall one moment when this talented actress promised a big announcement on Twitter--in a little while. Nine thousand, six hundred and twenty-two tweets later, that announcement came. In the meantime, thousands of articulate, smart people sat through all those tweets (myself included) in an almost paralyzed state waiting and waiting and waiting. Chappell clearly knows how to create a marketing buzz to say the least. I should have been writing or cleaning the toilet bowl or something, but instead, I was waiting for the big Venice announcement. The woman is a genius!
Aside from the new connections I have recently made by tweeting, the thrilling part for me is that the husband guy now calls me tweetie and he has actually rediscovered the toilet bowl brush. Do share your Twitter/soaps distractions and nightmares here just so I know I am not alone.
