Find out more about Mary: Mary Montanari is so into ‘Afternoon Delight’---she has amnesia insurance and wants to be buried with breath mints in case she comes back from the dead. If you love the world of soap operas…you just have to come here daily. |

Fridays are usually good days on the soaps in terms of wrapping up critical plots, but One Life to Live not only ruined my week but also destroyed my Friday as well.
Perhaps I have been focusing on One Life to Live for way too long, but as painful as it is right now, I have to wrap up the week. We all only get one life to live but for most of the soaps community, it's become clear that if you only have time for one soap to watch, it won't be this one for a very long time. The writing has become transparent and insensitive to say the least and loyal fans don't like to be insulted by totally unacceptable and insane plots conjured up by soap executives and the writers under their direction. See my previous piece about Marty and Todd's meeting between the sheets here.
On Friday, Todd left Marty to dash off to the hospital to tell Starr's doctor he changed his mind about stealing her baby. I guess his former rape victim Marty won't be raising a baby with Todd anytime soon despite the fact that he has brainwashed her into believing that was the plan and that she would make a fabulous mother. Todd's daughter Starr has already been told by her doctor that her child was in trouble. The infant is actually fine but dad Todd had previously blackmailed Doctor Joplin into telling his own daughter her child had died so he could snatch his granddaughter and and raise her with Marty--a woman with amnesia who he raped years ago.
In the meantime, Jessica/Tess delivers a stillborn infant, and, after the birth a new alter personality named Bess takes over for Jess/Tess to make things right. I don't know about you, but I never saw Bess coming. Bess decides to clean up the mess Tess left behind and take that dead infant to the hospital to make things right. This is where the transparent and predictable script writing came in over at "One Life to Live."
Fans all over the message boards knew well that Jess/Tess/Bess (or whoever the hell she is) was going to do the baby swap thing. Sadly for Jessica who has been through way too much already while battling the loss of her husband and unwittingly coping with her mental illness, they didn't have to add a stillborn to all her issues at this point. It was downright unfair. Typically, the networks protect big storylines from leaking out ahead of time but in this case everyone knew. It wasn't too very hard to figure out what was about to come down the pike and I have no idea how much One Life to Live thinks we can digest.
Has the Todd/Marty storyline made you think about turning off this show for good? Let me know here. I so need someone to vent with me here and for a really terrific take on the Marty/Todd debacle, do read Marlena de Lacroix here. Nobody could say it better than Marlena.
