Meet the police officer who ended the Fort Hood massacre

Police Sgt. Kim Munley
As the shooting spree was taking place yesterday in a section of the base used to ready soldiers for deployment, soldiers and civilians alike were running for cover, except for police Sgt. Kim Munley. Officer Munley made her way towards the shhoting and shot Maj. Malik Hasan four times, bringing the alleged killer’s rampage to an abrupt and violent end.
During the confrontation with Hasan, Officer Munley was also shot, when a bullet passed through both of her legs. She is recovering in a local hospital and is reportedly making phone calls to friends and family, and is in good spirits.
While the attack left 13 people dead and another 30 wounded, the carnage could have been much worse if not for the bravery and quick reaction of Officer Munley.
All of the shooting victims were unarmed.
Base commander, Lieutenant-General Bob Cone, said of Officer Munley: “She happened to encounter the gunman. In an exchange of gunfire, she was wounded but managed to wound him four times. It was an amazing and aggressive performance by this police officer.”
Munley, 34, is a civilian police officer who patrols and lives on the base, she is married to Staff Sgt. Matthew Munley. Her husband has completed two tours of duty in Iraq and was recently transferred to Fort Bragg, NC. The couple has a 3-year-old daughter.
With so many soldiers deployed in the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, many of the homes on the base are unoccupied, and consequently vulnerable to thieves.
Sgt. William Barbrow, one of Munley‘s neighbors, told CNN: "We sleep a lot safer knowing she's on the block.”
Munley’s brief bio on her Twitter page sums up this unassuming hero quite succinctly. It states: "I live a good life ... a hard one, but I go to sleep peacefully @ night knowing that I may have made a difference in someone's life."
