We all know it is a tough job market right now. We’re starting to hear feedback from job candidates becoming discouraged and thinking maybe it is best to sit on the sidelines until the economy improves. Even if you are financially well off and can afford to do so, one has to wonder whether this is the best strategy or not.
Fact of the matter is there are companies hiring today. They may even be thinking now is the perfect time to hire. With a higher number of unemployed, the candidate pool is better than it has been in years.
So what do you do? Figure out what companies are hiring. They’ll have their postings prominently displayed on Monster, CareerBuilder, Hotjobs, etc. They’ll also be participating in the local job fairs. Once you have figured out the companies, be proactive. Learn about the companies on the web, their own website, press releases, etc.
When applying for the job, include this information in your cover letter. Don’t stop there. Figure out who the hiring manager is via Linkedin, Zoominfo, etc. Get your resume and cover letter into their hands and then call them. Have your talking points prepared. Also have a voice mail message prepared. It is more likely you will get their voice mail than they will answer the phone.
Follow up with another phone call every few days. Hiring managers love persistence.
