It won't be released until January 14, but people are already buying on Ebay Marvel's AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #583 featuring the superprez's meeting with his hero, Peter Parker's alter ego. An early copy went for $16.95 today and another is offered at $29.95 under buy-it-now terms. There are a few more. But relax -- the sellers won't be shipping them out before their official release date.
The story is written by Mark Waid, pencils by Barry Kitson, with variant cover featuring Barack Obama done by Phil Jiminez.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN followers will understand -- in the issue, after the revelations of 'Mind on Fire', love is in the air for more than one member of the cast and Pete finally gets some time out with the ladies. Amidst the romance though, forces are gathering that will spell trouble for Peter in the months to come. The backup story is the one where Spidey meets the new President-elect. Seems in his Peter Parker/photojournalist guise he has to cover the inauguration. Then he spots two Obamas.
Parker decides the new Commander-in-Chief will need Spider-Man. He cleverly uses a basketball manuever to determine the real Obama and punches out the impostor.
Obama is grateful and shows his appreciation with a fist-bump.
Marvel decided to do the comic when it learned Obama, in real life, is a Spider-Man fan. The issue marks the first time a President of the United States appears as a major character in a Spider-Man, although most presidents in recently history have been mentioned briefly. Nixon was on a cover "but not in a good way," Marvel told Huffington Post.
Obama is on record as having collected Spider-Man and Conan the Barbarian comics as a child. His Senate Web site once had a photo of him in front of a Superman statue.
If you wait, you won't have to pay Ebay prices. The issue will retail for $3.99. But it's expected to sell out quickly.
