Four comic books will be released beginning in January as lead-ins to the 11th Star Trek movie and the first to feature a Captain Kirk NOT played by William Shatner. The movie will be released in May, 2009.
The limited edition comic book quad is being produced by IDW Publishing in conjunction with Paramount Pictures, J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, Kurtzman/Orci Productions and CBS Consumer Products.
The first comic in the series, Star Trek: Countdown #1, was plotted by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and written by Mike Johnson, of Superman/Batman titles, and Tim Jones, and features "stunning" art by David Messina, according to an IDW press release. Messin drew Star Trek: Mirror Images. He also designed the covers for the new comic book series.
If we can take a hint from the first cover, Captain Picard and Data will come into the plot somehow. We already know the elder Mr. Spock comes back in time to assist his younger self.
Series editor Andy Schmidt said: “There was a lot of back and forth about doing this project, how to do it, what it would be about, but what all parties agreed on was that we needed the right story and that it needed to matter. It had to count both on its own merits and when read in conjunction with the new movie.”
“I couldn’t be happier with the project and what it means to the overall Star Trek franchise!” Schmidt added.
"Star Trek: Countdown lays the groundwork for what happens in the movie," said Roberto Orci. "It's our way of passing the baton from the Next Generation characters and their movies to the new film."
Star Trek: Countdown #1 (Diamond item code NOV08 4113), is 32 pages and will sell for $3.99.
